Financial Aid and Scholarships

Do NOT assume that you can not afford to Study Abroad!

Every study abroad program has a set cost that depends on location and duration as well as possible housing (home-stay, residence halls, apartments, etc.) and food (home-cooked, cafeteria, etc.) options.  In addition, each student has a different financial aid package that may consist of Federal, State, Institutional, and/or outside grants, loans and scholarships.  These combinations, as well as optional travel before/during/after the study abroad experience, can all affect the final out-of-pocket costs.

It can seem complicated but the Office of Financial Aid at ONU has personnel that will meet one-on-one with students to explain the applicability of their financial aid package to study abroad programs. Students are highly encouraged to meet with a financial aid officer as early as possible in their academic career to discuss their interest in overseas study and possible funding options.

Students must visit the Financial Aid Office to fill out and return to the ONU Office of Financial Aid a Financial Aid for International Study form, and have a FAFSA form on file.

How does Study Abroad Financial Aid work?

There are a two typical paths to study abroad: Direct Exchange Programs and Affiliated Organizations and Institutions. Each individual option will cost a different from the next and information on cost is available online or at the study abroad office.

  • Direct Exchange Programs - Participants in a Direct Exchange program are eligible to use their ONU financial aid package.
  • Affiliated Organizations and Institutions - No direct university aid funds or university tuition remission provisions apply for students participating in a Sponsored Program . However, federal and state assistance applies.
