Mission Statement

Ohio Northern University Study Abroad is dedicated to furthering the educational goals of the institution by providing students with challenging opportunities in uniquely different learning environments and cultural settings. The international dimension of the university seeks to develop in students an interest, understanding, and appreciation of other peoples and a cultivation of a spirit of world citizenship within the university community.

With a focus on broadening our student’s international perspective and supporting their individual growth and intellectual development, ONU Study Abroad is committed to promoting intercultural understanding, acquisition of language and communication skills, providing appropriate academic learning opportunities, and encouraging leadership, service to the community, maturity and tolerance.

General Overview

The minimum requirements for participation in study abroad programs are established by the individual colleges of Ohio Northern University. Your academic advisor will be able to assist you in evaluating your qualifications for a study abroad program. Primary considerations may include, but are not limited to, a statement of interest, acceptable grade point average, and completion of a stated minimum number of credit hours.

Students at all stages in their educational career are encouraged to study abroad. Various personal and academic circumstances will come into play when deciding on the appropriate time for a study abroad experience. For some students, a short-term (January or Summer) or semester overseas as early as their freshman year is appropriate. This initial experience may help prepare the student for a more extensive immersion (year-long) in a foreign culture at some point in the future. Often, a student will choose to spend a full year on a study abroad exchange program in their sophomore or junior year. The last 30 credit hours (the student's senior year) usually must be completed on campus at Ohio Northern University, although this requirement may be waived for study abroad experiences.

A student should be aware that the decision to study abroad during his or her final semester as an ONU student may affect graduation.  Official transcripts from the overseas institution must be received by the Registrar's Office prior to the Friday before Commencement, or the student's graduation date may be deferred and the student will be unable to participate in the commencement ceremony.

General inquiries about all programs are welcome in the Study Abroad Office. However, in instances of discipline specific programs (i.e. theatre, art & design, etc.) it is recommended that students first contact their college dean or international study abroad faculty coordinator.
